Earn your AuD from a highly ranked, rigorous program in just three years. 

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association no longer requires a set number of clinical hours for students graduating in 2020 or later.  Instead, students are required to demonstrate the knowledge and skills that form the basis of quality audiology practice.

ASHA requirements

Previously, a fourth-year externship was required for audiology students to earn the 1,820 supervised clinical hours necessary to obtain a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) through ASHA. Recent ASHA changes allow the College of Health Solutions to offer a rigorous AuD degree with strong clinical training that can be completed in three years, rather than the traditional four. The College of Health Solutions had the foresight to address concerns regarding cost and training hours prior to these changes from ASHA. In 2017, the number of clinic hours required to graduate from our accredited audiology program was changed to 850. The change means that students can graduate at the completion of the third year. The program is designed to lower costs for students while maintaining academic rigor. Students who want additional audiology experience before entering the workforce may apply for a fourth-year externship, similar to the traditional model. However, a fourth-year externship is no longer required by ASHA to obtain CCC-A certification.

In addition, it is important for students to note that only state licensure is required to practice in many states and clinical settings. The AuD program at ASU fully supports the pursuit of the ASHA CCC-A credential, but ASHA CCC-A may not be required for gainful employment post-graduation, depending on location.

Applying for ASHA certification

In order to apply for ASHA certification, all 850 hours of your program need to be supervised by ASHA-certified clinical instructors. Once you have met this requirement, you may apply for certification immediately after graduating from the three-year program.

If you need CCC-A certification after graduation and some of your clinical hours were not completed under ASHA-certified audiologists, ASHA allows you to make up those hours after graduation while employed under or with a qualified ASHA-certified audiologist.This employment must meet the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) duration standards and sufficiently demonstrate the acquisition of the knowledge and skills required by the ASHA Standards. The post-graduation certification process must occur within 24 months of graduation. Your hours and application must be completed within 48 months. To learn more, visit the ASHA website.

In response to changes in ASHA certification, our AuD program offers cost savings and the same thorough education, with flexible program options for graduation after three or four years.

The goals of the MS in communication disorders are to:

• Prepare students for employment in multiple settings to address the needs of people with communication, speech, language, literacy and swallowing difficulties.

Note: The Praxis examination reporting period is the testing year or examination cycle, not the year of graduation for the test-takers. The data for each reporting period may include test-takers who graduated from the program within the prior three years.

Pending program accreditation, completion of this program qualifies students to sit for the Board of Certification examination in cytology. Certification is required for full clinical practice as a cytologist.

The mission of the Master of Science in genetic counseling at Arizona State University’s College of Health Solutions is to prepare genetic counselors, who are from a variety of backgrounds and identities, to work in the field of genetics where they will apply their knowledge and unique skill set to help advance the understanding of genetics and genomics-related conditions in order to improve health outcomes within the communities where they work and live.

Program objectives

• Instill a sense of personal, professional and societal responsibility to respect, honor and value each other, professional colleagues, clients and members of our communities, irrespective of an individual’s background or personal identity
• Ensure new graduates meet the Practice-Based Competencies for Genetic Counselors
• Prepare new graduates to pass the American Board of Genetic Counseling certification examination
• Equip new graduates to be able to secure a job in the health care field, a laboratory setting or other position relevant to their expertise in genetics and genetic counseling
• Provide new graduates with the skills to be able to conduct research, read and write manuscripts related to the field of genetics/genomics and genetic counseling

This program has been determined eligible to apply for CAHME candidacy, marking the first step in a self-driven journey toward accreditation. Eligibility does not constitute accredited status nor guarantee candidacy or accreditation. While CAHME establishes data collection timeframes, the pace of accreditation is ultimately program-driven and depends on proactive engagement. CAHME accredits master's-level healthcare management programs and is recognized by CHEA.
