Water Talks

Hydration is often overlooked and under-studied research topic. Yet underhydration is linked to chronic diseases like diabetes, kidney dysfunction and cognitive decline. Learn about the latest research in the study of hydration through a series of no-cost lectures from experts in hydration.

From Neighborhood to Nephrons: Hydration Practices, Social Context and Biomarkers in a Racially Diverse Young Adult Cohort

This presentation examines the challenge of occupational heat stress, focusing on its physiological basis, health consequences and implications for worker safety and productivity. It synthesizes epidemiological and experimental evidence to explain how environmental heat exposure and metabolic workload interact to drive hyperthermia, heat illness, injury risk and kidney strain, including acute kidney injury and progression toward chronic kidney disease. The talk also highlights high-risk occupations, evaluates evidence-based heat-safety interventions (e.g., rest, shade, hydration) and demonstrates that well-implemented heat-mitigation strategies can reduce health risks while delivering measurable economic and productivity benefits.

Austin Robinson

Speaker - Austin Robinson

Austin Robinson is a cardiovascular researcher focused on integrative strategies to prevent and treat heart disease. His work examines how key health behaviors—including hydration, nutrition, sleep and physical activity—influence cardiovascular physiology in both health and disease. A growing emphasis of his research explores the role of hydration status in vascular function, thermoregulation and overall cardiometabolic health. He is also committed to understanding racial disparities in cardiovascular outcomes by investigating underlying social determinants and physiological mechanisms. Austin has received funding from the NIH, AHA and ACSM, and is actively engaged in professional service across leading scientific organizations.
