Required internship hours

How many hours will I be required to work at my internship?

Total required internship work hours are based on enrolled credit hours. Please see your academic advisor to discuss the correct credit hours for your major and course map.

Internship Hours are cumulative, meaning you are required to meet your total internship hours by the end of the semester. The student and site supervisor should plan the students work schedule according to available hours to ensure the total required hours are met before the end of the semester. Students who fail to work the required number of hours will not receive a passing grade for the course.

How to calculate your total work hours

Enrolled course credits (1 - 12) x 45 work hours/credit = Total required work hours

Students should calculate their hours for the semester at the beginning of the internship. Don't forget to consider the following:

  • Actual Start and End Date
  • Holidays
  • Vacations (any planned absences)
  • Plan to finish a few days early. This will allow an extra day or two to make up hours, if needed.

Plan carefully. In order to receive a passing grade for the course, you must complete all of your required hours within the appropriate semester timeline.

Semester (weeks) 3 credits (135 hours) 6 credits (270 hours) 9 credits (405 hours) 12 credits (540 hours)
Fall semester (14 weeks) 10 hours / week 20 hours / week 30 hours / week 40 hours / week
Spring semester (14 weeks) 10 hours / week 20 hours / week 30 hours / week 40 hours / week
Summer semester (7 weeks) 20 hours / week 40 hours / week see internship coordinator see internship coordinator

Internship hours are graded on cumulative hours for the semester. Students should plan to have 50% of their hours completed by midterm and 100% completed before the end of the semester.
