Physicians are in the front lines of transformation of primary care being shaped by the Affordable Care Act, such the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model and the Accountable Care Organization (ACO). A key focus in the PCMH and ACO is improved prevention and management of chronic disease based on the emerging model of integrated behavioral health, the coordinated treatment of:

  • Chronic medical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension
  • Lifestyle problems such as poor nutrition, physical inactivity, smoking and obesity that underlie poor disease outcome, and;
  • Behavioral conditions such as depression, anxiety and substance abuse that are highly comorbid with chronic medical disease

In spite of the key role for physicians as the team leader in the PCMH/ACO mode, most training on these key integrated behavioral health topics are designed for behavioral clinicians (psychologists, social workers). In contrast, these online education modules aredesigned by physicians and experienced primary care psychologists for physicians.

The education and training is designed to answer questions such as:

  • What is integrated behavioral care? Why is it important? What’s in it for me?
  • How can I practice integrated care as a physician?
  • How can I transform my existing clinical staff into a high performing integrated care team?
  • What is the new Behavioral Health Consultant in primary care? Do I need to add one to my team?
