Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary science that combines computer science, statistics, mathematics, and engineering to analyze and interpret biological data. With the main focus on molecular data, the scope of Bioinformatics ranges from signal processing to data management, from analysis of a single gene to comparison of multiple genomes, and from studying human diseases to investigating biodiversity on earth.

With the recent advent of high throughput biotechnologies, such as NextGen sequencing, the role of Bioinformatics in advancing Genomics and Genomic Medicine has become increasingly important. BMI offers an innovative education and research program in Translational Bioinformatics that aims to translate large-scale omics data into biomedical knowledge to improve patient care. This is achieved via cutting-edge research activities, close collaborations with healthcare delivery organizations, and actively involving students in applied projects.

Some examples of current activities of our faculty include:

  1. Develop novel computational approaches to discover biomarkers of complex diseases.
  2. Reconstruct subclonal evolutionary profiles to guide adaptive cancer therapy.
  3. Investigate health disparities across ethnic groups via population-guided data mining
  4. Computer-aided vaccine design
