Research

Biomedical informatics is the interdisciplinary field that focuses on the effective uses of biomedical data, information, and knowledge to improve patient care and health sciences research. Research in biomedical informatics promotes collaborations among computer scientists, engineers, mathematicians, biologists, clinicians and decision scientists.

The domain encompasses the five major sub-fields of: 

  • Clinical Informatics
    Clinical informatics focuses on the acquisition, management, analysis of clinical and biomedical data to improve the quality of patient care and health outcomes. 
  • Population Health
    Population health informatics focuses on the acquisition, management, analysis of population and biomedical data to facilitate epidemiology and reduce the burden of disease in the population. 
  • Bioinformatics
    Bioinformatics focuses on the acquisition, management, analysis of biological data and its integration into the clinical environment to personalize medical treatment and improve health outcomes.
  • Imaging Informatics
    Imaging informatics focuses on the acquisition, management, analysis of imaging data to improve radiology and analysis of clinical imaging.
  • Cross-cutting Areas
    Cross-cutting areas of informatics can span the bioclinical, and population health domains and include natural language processing big data analytics such as data mining. 

 The Department of Biomedical Informatics at Arizona State University is supported by unique collaborations with Mayo ClinicBanner HealthBarrow Neurological Institute, and The University of Arizona College of Medicine.  These collaborations lead to advancements in information technology, data and knowledge management and analysis methodologies to improve our understanding of many aspects of health care. The goal of this research is to enhance patient care and overall human health by expediting the process of transferring basic biomedical research to clinical use effectively and safely.
