Assistant/Associate Professor - Data Analytics for Population Health

The Department of Biomedical Informatics (BMI) within the College of Health Solutions (CHS) at Arizona State University (ASU) seeks a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, with a focus on data analytics for population health and epidemiology.

Applicants will demonstrate solid knowledge and skills in quantitative methodologies to conduct research on big data analytics in the healthcare domain. Applicants will expect to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on research projects and play an important role in the further development and use of the comprehensive health care information in the ASU Center for Health Information & Research, Mayo Clinic and other local, national and international health care organizations. 

Applicants will demonstrate abilities to generate research publications and success of securing extramural research funds. Successful candidates will drive a research agenda around population health and health data and become a strategic leader in health informatics. The position also requires developing and teaching courses in health informatics at the undergraduate or graduate levels, mentoring students in research, and providing service to the BMI program, and university as well as to the community and profession. 

BMI has several offices, one of which is located at Mayo Clinic’s campus in Scottsdale, AZ. BMI researchers collaborate with faculty and staff at health systems throughout the Phoenix area.  BMI offers BS, MS, and PhD degree programs, as well as a new online Master’s degree in Health Informatics.

The College of Health Solutions is dedicated to translating scientific advances to improve health outcomes through education, research and service. We equip students with the knowledge and skills to influence healthier lifestyle choices; develop creative interventions to improve the health of people and populations; analyze and translate large amounts of health data into solutions; and maximize the technology, science, business and application of diagnostics. The college’s research programs encompass basic/discovery science, clinical trials, intervention science, and measurement of health outcomes. In all cases, the CHS focus is to use interdisciplinary approaches to addressing the complex systems that underpin all health problems for the goal of improving health outcomes of the population. This includes behavioral health, biomedical diagnostics, biomedical informatics, executive education, exercise science, health promotion, health sciences, kinesiology, medical studies, nutrition, population health, the science of health care delivery, and speech and hearing science. Our programs are offered at ASU’s Downtown Phoenix, Tempe, West and Lake Havasu campuses, as well as on Mayo Clinic’s Scottsdale campus.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, biomedical informatics, computer science or related data science field 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health data analytics as well as experience in applications
  • Demonstrated experience with research and/or supporting research including evidence of annually peer reviewed publications commensurate with rank 
  • Demonstrated experience in writing and securing grants:  evidence of grant submissions annually and grant awards commensurate with rank
  • Demonstrated experience and skills of developing and teaching courses at undergraduate level and graduate level with on-campus and/or online courses commensurate with rank
  • Demonstrated ability to provide service to the program and university, as well as to the community and profession 

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication (oral and written) skills 
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for and interest in working with, and the ability to communicate, technical information in an understandable way to large and diverse audiences 
  • Demonstrated experience with data modeling for improved health outcomes
  • Demonstrated experience of collaborations with health organizations
