Overview

The Master of Integrated Health Care (MIHC) program will prepare you to develop, implement, evaluate and sustain integrated care programs in diverse health care settings. Integrated health care is the delivery of coordinated, team-based interventions for medical and behavioral conditions, and the lifestyle behavior changes necessary for improved disease prevention and management. Integrated health care programs include prevention, wellness, and disease management programs for patients with conditions such as type 2 diabetes and depression. Our health care system is facing the challenge of more patients presenting with multiple, chronic conditions, and a shortage of professionals trained design and delivery evidence-based treatments.

New models of health care delivery such as the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and Accountable Care Organization (ACO) are incorporating integrated health care as a key component to achieve the “Triple Aim” of improved patient experience of care, population health management, and cost-savings. There is a lack of trained leaders ready to develop and manage these new and innovative models of integrated health care delivery. This need is reflected in the growing number of integrated care programs in primary care clinics, hospitals, within mental health and substance abuse treatment programs, in health plan disease management and employer-based wellness programs, and more.  

Prospective Students

The MIHC curriculum is designed to provide you a foundation in interprofessional consultation and management skills critical for leading integrated health care programs. The MIHC is equally suited to new bachelor degree graduates entering the field as well as experienced working professionals interested in advancing their career in this exciting new field. The MIHC is appropriate both for management professionals and health care providers interested in moving into management positions.

Our curriculum begins with models of integrated health care and evidence-based interventions. You will learn approaches to quality improvement based on Lean and Six Sigma critical to improving efficiency, reducing waste and maximizing outcomes. You will learn to manage performance within a framework of big data and business analytics. Our courses will prepare you for the challenges of managing business operations, strategic planning, and financial management critical for sustainable integrated health care programs. Students learn the team-building skills critical for achieving buy-in at all organizational levels to promote new integrated care programs. We prepare our graduates with the requisite skills to enter the workforce and meet the growing demand for creating and evaluating integrated health programs.

Our MIHC faculty will provide you personalized instruction and hands-on classroom-based learning experience with an emphasis on business simulation and scenario planning. You will develop and complete an applied project based on integrated health management and tailored to your professional goals. The applied project is seamlessly integrated into the curriculum so that you can refine and improve it to successful completion and add the final product to your graduation portfolio. Our expert faculty have current and recognized experience in the field of integrated health care management and will guide you to identify the best career opportunities based on your professional interests.

Admission Requirements

Applicants who have completed a bachelor’s degree and have an interest in a career in integrated health care management are encouraged to apply. Admission requirements include:

  • minimum of bachelor's degree in social or behavioral sciences, health, business, public health, management or related field from a regionally accredited college or university;
  • minimum of a 3.00 cumulative GPA (scale is 4.00="A") in the last 60 hours of a student's bachelor's degree program;

All applicants must complete an online graduate admission application and submit the following evidence for admission review:

  • professional references from at least one individual who is familiar with the applicant's academic record, and/or professional experience, in addition to the contact information of the recommenders.
  • proof of English proficiency*

*Applicants whose native language is not English (regardless of current residency) must provide proof of English proficiency. Applicants must fulfill both the requirements of the Division of Graduate Education and those of the College of Health Solutions.

Applications are reviewed based on an algorithm that includes undergraduate grade point average, management experience (desired but not required) and letter of recommendation.

The MIHC is a full-time, cohort-based program that begins in the fall semester and concludes the following spring semester. The courses are hybrid in design, combining online learning with classroom-based learning. Courses are scheduled on weekday late afternoon and early evening hours to accommodate the schedules of students who are attending while working.
The MIHC requires A minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate work beyond the bachelor's degree. The MIHC is comprised of 7 core courses, an Applied Project Course, and 2 electives. You may enroll in approved elective courses based on their specific areas of interest to best tailor meet your professional goals. In summary, the required credits include:

  • 21 credit hours based on the seven MIHC core courses
  • 3 credit hours for the MIHC Applied Project
  • 6 credit hours based on 500-level or higher elective courses from other ASU degree programs (based on pre-requisite requirements, instructor approval, if required)

Curriculum

IBC 520 – Integrated Health Care: The Patient-Centered Medical Home(PCMH) – Overview of the PCMH model; Defining behavioral health (medical disease management, lifestyle, behavioral conditions); The Behavioral Health Provider; Achieving the Triple Aim; Evidence-based behavioral health interventions, Population Health Management overview.

IBC 530 – Evidence-based Integrated Health Care –  How to identify evidence-based integrated health treatment and management programs; Comparative effectiveness research; Evidence based health vs. evidence-based medicine; Current guidelines; Population health management; cost-savings and return on investment; protocols, E health tools.

IBC 540 – Integrated Health Care Process Improvement – Key national performance metrics for integrated care: NCQA, HEDIS, UDS, CMS, URAC.  Process improvement based on quality improvement, Lean and Six Sigma. Value stream mapping standardization and reliability; customization; PDSA, RE-AIM. Run Charts and Control Charts. Rapid Improvement Events; A3 Report. Translating scientific evidence to applied clinical settings.

IBC 550 – Integrated Care Business Operations – Business operations in integrated care: Integrated care readiness, measuring degree of integration; Human Resource management, performance evaluation and productivity; workflow and care paths; building trusting relationships; engagement ingredients; caring for the complex patient; community-based programs

IBC 560 – Strategic Business Planning and Big Data – The role of big data in healthcare analytics and strategic business planning. Data mining for outliers; learning from everyday experiments; infodemiology; geographic data mining; using data analytics to set benchmarks.

IBC 570 – Financial Management – Contracting beyond fee for service: Negotiating shared-risk, incentive-based, capitated contracts for integrated health programs. Capitation, pay for performance incentive models that work; defining win-win process and outcome metrics; value-based negotiation strategies; Ensuring revenue and profitability through productivity and efficiencies.

IBC 585Interprofessional Consultation, Leadership and Teamwork in Integrated Health Care – Leadership in integrated care; team-building and team-based culture; the importance of proximity; operating at the top of license; collaborative care model; clinical teamwork and the team scorecard; customer centered care.

IBC 593 – Applied Project – A practical project conducted by students that explores a problem in integrated health care delivery and how it is addressed by health care organizations. The project will be identified early in the program in conjunction with and overseen by an academic mentor. These projects will be worked on through the year with final written and verbal reports due in the final semester.

Lesley Manson

Lesley Manson, Psy.D.

Dr. Lesley Manson, Psy.D. has spent over a decade providing direct service. Her dedication to behavioral health and integrated care models led her to directing behavioral health programs, providing continuing education to healthcare providers, and developing workshops and trainings for behavioral health and primary care providers to be successful and integral members of healthcare teams. Her specialty is within the area of building fiscally sustainable integrated health care with identifiable return on investment and cost savings. She has advanced experience in continuous quality improvement, behavior change, and standardization and outcome measurement for behavioral health programs integrated into primary care. Dr. Manson has spearheaded multidisciplinary teams for primary care process improvement and population specific quality improvement and standardization, which has led to improved healthcare outcomes, enhanced quality assurance, increased compliance and patient engagement, and reduced healthcare costs. She was an integral member of teams for the development of electronic medical health records with integrated shared behavioral health focusing on standardization, best practices, and evidence based techniques. Her history as a health care executive has led her to voluminous national presentations on integration with both clinical and management focus and providing consultation and training for primary care and medical/behavioral organizations in developing and auditing for integrated care quality and fiscal sustainability. She develops train-the-trainer and additional educational programming for numerous contracted agencies such as Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education, and various federal and independent medical associations and organizations. Historically, she has been an active member of her local and national professional primary care and behavioral health organizations, serving on numerous boards, receiving recognitions, and was former president of the North Coast Association of Mental Health Professionals in CA and has co-chaired the PCBH and Pediatric special interest groups for the Collaborative Family Healthcare Association. She was honored with certificate training from Johnson and Johnson UCLA Health Care Executive Program. She is also a master trainer for the Institute for Health Care Communication and conducts workshops in the area of clinician-patient interaction, team based care, and communication to meet healthcare’s triple/quadruple aim. She serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor and Assistant Chair of Integrated Initiatives at Arizona State University Doctor of Behavioral Health Program. Further she provides consultation related to building and training for fiscally sustainable Integrated Care Behavioral Health programs. She has numerous publications on integration and is a co-author of "Integrating Behavioral Health into the Medical Home.”

Lesley Manson

Lee Martinez

Lee has significant leadership, management, project, and consulting experience in several industries and fields including supply chain management and healthcare.  Lee currently works for Arizona Complete Health (AzCH), a member of Centene Corporation’s (Fortune 66) Arizona family of companies, where he is responsible for the following:

  • Health Home Development.  Developing bi-directional integration capability throughout Southern Arizona
  • Provider Contract Performance.  Lee leads a team of 6 Provider Mentors who serve as consultants to the providers in the Cenpatico Integrated Care network
  • Wellness and Disease Management Program Development.  Lee’s team is currently involved in the SAMHSA-HRSA Center for Integrated Health Solution’s (CIHS) Innovation Community for Behavioral Health Integration for Chronic Disease Management of Depression and Diabetes
  • Population Health Management.  Lee mentors a team of a dozen Population Health Management Administrators (PHAs), representing health homes throughout Southern Arizona
  • Outcomes Research and Analysis.  Lee’s team includes a Lean/Six-Sigma Black belt that provides expertise in data for performance

Lee is a licensed psychotherapist, a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ), and a Lean-Six Sigma Green Belt.  Lee is scheduled to graduate from ASU’s Doctor of Behavioral Health Program in the Spring of 2018.

Sophia Murphy

In almost 10 years of direct service Dr. Murphy has been fortunate to work with adults, adolescents,and children. She's provided behavioral treatment to individuals, couples and groups.Predominantly featured throughout her experiences has beenan emphasis on the value of multicultural competency and a deep exploration of the relationship between identity and health. Dr. Murphy aims tosupport her patients inbettering their lives and reaching their individual goals through a holistic approach targeting mind-body health. She is certified as a Personal Trainer from the National Academyof Sports Medicineand is licensed as a Professional Counselor with the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners.

As an undergraduate student, Dr. Murphy earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from the University of North Florida. She completed a Master of Science from the Department of Counseling at San Francisco State University, specializing in marriage and family therapy with an emphasis in rehabilitation.

In earning her Doctor of Behavioral Health degree fromArizona State University, Dr. Murphy received advanced training in collaborative care and population-based health management. Her primary focusincludes the relationship between health, nutrition, physical activity and depression. Currently, she owns and operates a private practice in Tempeand works as the Emotional Wellness Supervisor overseeing the integration of medical and behavioral health services at Bayless Integrated Healthcare in Central Phoenix. Dr. Murphy works closely with medicalpractitionersto provide behavioral health services tailored to the unique needs ofpatients living with chronic illness.

Dr.O’Donnell is a Clinical Professor, psychologist andfoundingDirector of the Doctor of Behavioral Health programin the College of Health Solutionsat Arizona State University, in Phoenix, Arizona.Hiscurrentresponsibilities include Program Manager, International Partnerships,faculty memberin the Master ofIntegratedHealth Care degree, and development of an online continuing education program in integrated health care.Heis president ofSunCraneHealth Solutions, LLC,aninternational behavioral health consulting company.

Dr. O'Donnell has oversevenyears of experience as a consultant, trainer and lecturer in China and Southeast Asia. Dr. O’Donnell has presented at conferences in theUnitedStates and in China, Taiwan,Malaysiaand Vietnam.He provides oversight for the ASU USAID Global Development Scholar program, placing 6 DBH students in China, Vietnam and Thailand to study and research.  He hascoordinatedtraining visits for Chinese physicians to the United States.He has been a faculty teachingcourses at Sichuan University and Beijing Normal University, and guest lecturer for Duke Kunshan University..He ison the editorial board for the journalFamily Medicine and Community Health and he is a Research Fellow with Renmin University of China.

Prior to his current position Dr. O’Donnell spent over 10 years as a leader in health plans as director of disease management programs.He directed teams of physicians, nurses, dieticians and behavioral health consultants on providing patient prevention and disease management programs for conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and depression. He has consulted with national companies on the design, implementation and evaluation of health management programs that incorporate web-based patient education and self-management tools.Dr. O'Donnellspent over 8 years as director of outpatient behavioral health clinicsthat were co-located with primary care clinics.Earlier he was director of psychiatric hospital inpatient units. He trained psychiatrists and nurses on behavioral health and launched a comprehensive group education treatment program for patients with severe mental illness.

Dr. O’Donnell has significant experience treating the severely mentally ill, including as a community based care manager providing crisis management. Dr. O’Donnell’s clinical experience includes treatment of adult depression, anxiety, and trauma, substance abuse, child treatment of attention deficient disorder, autism spectrum disorders and oppositional defiant disorders, and adolescent treatment for family conflict, substance abuse and school behavior problems. He is experienced in individual, couples and family, and group psychotherapy treatment techniques.

Bill is a Senior Healthcare Advisor, Executive Leadership Consultant, and Keynote Speaker with over 35 years of healthcare experience in senior executive positions. Most recently he served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Maricopa Integrated Health System, an academic medical center and the largest public healthcare organization in Arizona.

Prior to joining MIHS, Bill served as the EVP/COO for Parkland Health and Hospital System in Dallas. Earlier assignments have included: The Guthrie Healthcare System in Pennsylvania where he held the position of President of the Hospitals as well as the EVP/COO for the system and the St Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita, KS, where he was the President and CEO.He has guided hospitals to national recognition as a Top 100 Hospital in several clinical and operational areas and gained recognition for their focus on patient service and safety.

A Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Bill also serves on the faculty of the College and has presented numerous seminars on the development and management of service lines within health care. He has spoken and written extensively on the issues ofleadership in healthcare at numerous conferences and related publications. He has authored numerous papers on performance and quality improvement and is a contributor to a soon to be published book on the development of the Healthcare enterprise for the 21st century.

​He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY and holds a Master’s Degrees in Structural Engineering, as well as Construction Management, from the University of Colorado in Boulder, and aMaster’s Degree in Business Administration from Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

The MIHC program is designed to prepare graduates to develop, implement, evaluate and sustain integrated care programs in health care settings. Integrated behavioral care is the delivery of coordinated, integrated care for medical and behavioral conditions and the lifestyle behavior changes necessary for improved disease prevention and management.

The Master of Integrated Health Care curriculum is designed to provide students a foundation in models of integrated care, evidence-based interventions, and quality and performance management necessary to meet the "triple aim" of health care reform: improved patient experience of care, population health management, and cost-savings.

The degree program is expected to prepare graduates to meet the demand for integrated care programs in the emerging market that includes both the patient-centered, primary care medical home and the accountable care organization. This program is designed to benefit both health care clinicians with management responsibilities and managers or executives in health care settings.
