She received her degree in Public Health and Nutritional Science from the Fielding School of Public Health at University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA), followed by her M.D., also at UCLA. She was chief resident at UCLA Hospitals and Clinics, with her research published in the American Journal of Ob/Gyn. Since then, she has been a practicing physician with board certification in the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology.
Throughout her career, Dr. Varela has taught medical students and undergraduate students across various health science disciplines. In addition to her efforts at ASU, she is an adjunct clinical instructor at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is presently completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Arizona, Tucson, in integrative medicine and health and wellness coaching, with the goal of expanding her expertise in preventive care and nutrigenomics, and emphasizing preconceptual and antenatal nutrition.
Outside of her professional life, she enjoys time with her husband and four children, especially snow-shoe hiking, skeet shooting, road trips for more hiking, Vita-mixing, and food farming. She also has two Labrador Retrievers, Griffey and Clementine, six chickens, and Purple and Milton, her cats.
