The Shadow Experience

During the academic semesters, fall and spring, RTM majors and minors will have the opportunity to shadow an RTM Alum for a day. Students will experience the realities of working in the fields of Recreation, Tourism and Special Events.

Bachelor of Science - Internships

Students involved in internship work require an opportunity to discuss what they are doing, to work through problems, and to receive input and feedback from fellow students, faculty, and practitioners. It is desirable for the intern to have scheduled weekly meetings with the CIS for informal evaluation and information sessions. To expand an interns professional horizons, each student is encouraged, when feasible, to attend professional meetings, conferences, and workshops during the internship period. It is also desirable for students to participate in in-service training sessions held within their Cooperating Institution that relate to the interns areas of interest. Participation in these sessions should be coordinated through the CIS.

  • A cumulative grade point average of at least a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in all RTM prefix courses.
  • A classification of 4 (senior status) during the semester of the Field Education.
  • Successful completion (C or better) of all RTM 300, level core course work prior to the semester of the internship. If a student has taken a core course and received a grade lower than a C, the student may retake that course concurrent with the internship. A student may only retake one (1) core course concurrent with the internship.

Courses & Hours

The Internship (RTM 484) has been designed to provide the student with a well-rounded experience using components of cognitive and affective learning in an experiential setting it currently requires 12 semester credit hours. It is a three-way partnership of Students, ASU, and Cooperating Institutions. It is guided by a set of goals and objectives which are based on the need and resources of those involved. The interns goals and objectives will be developed with the University Internship Supervisor (UIS) and updated by the Cooperating Institution Supervisor (CIS). The goals represent skills and competencies that can be reasonably accomplished during the internship period. The original set of goals and objectives will be developed during the semester prior to the internship.
