A successful internship allows you to apply the knowledge and skills you have learned in your Communication courses in a professional setting. It also gives you the opportunity to improve those skills, acquire new ones, develop professional contacts, and explore various communication-related careers. If approached properly, the internship experience can help you choose a career path and strengthen your job candidacy. All assignments are due the last regularly scheduled day of classes, which is the Tuesday before Final Exam week.
To participate in the Communication Studies Internship Program, students must have a GPA of at least 2.8 or approval of the internship director; senior status; Communication Studies major or Public Relations and Strategic Communications minor. Students must be approved by both their Faculty Advisor and the Internship Director before enrolling in COM 484. Students must also attend a mandatory orientation session the semester before they plan to do an internship.
A 3-credit internship is equal to 160 hours of internship work. In the fall or spring semesters, this translates to approximately 10 hours per week; in the summer semester, approximately 20 hours per week. Be sure to schedule your semester to allow for this time spent at the internship site. Additional credit hours or variations are possible; however, they must be approved by the Internship Director and Faculty Advisor. A student may enroll in COM 484 as many times as agreed upon in the Plan of Study; however, a total of only 6 credits may be applied toward the Communication major.
The Internship Director's role is to serve as a resource and facilitator. The Director will advise you in choosing an internship, check in with you and your employer over the course of the semester to make sure things are going smoothly, evaluate your written assignments, and assign your final grade. Should any problems or questions arise during the course of your internship, please contact the Director immediately:
