Personal Statement

The personal statement provides an opportunity for you to discuss your background and your career plans. The statement, which should be no longer than five pages, double-spaced, should address your prior education and professional experience, discuss your career goals, and explain how obtaining a graduate degree in criminology and criminal justice will help you achieve those goals.

An effective personal statement is one that highlights your accomplishments in the classroom, in extracurricular activities, in volunteer work, and in your career. We are particularly interested in experiences that illustrate your potential for success in a graduate program attending a professional conference, presenting or publishing a research paper, involvement in a research project, or teaching at a college or university. We also would like to know why you want to pursue a graduate degree in criminology and criminal justice at ASU.
