The Graduate Certificate in Gerontology is for students who already have a bachelor's degree and wish to focus intensively on aging-related issues that may help them in a career or in their personal lives. While many students use their Certificate in specifically aging-related careers (such as care facility administration), many others find that a knowledge of aging issues is helpful across the career spectrum. Students in the financial, marketing, architecture, criminal justice, recreation and tourism, political science, social work, rehabilitation therapy, and many other fields also work with or for aging adults.
The Gerontology Certificate can be completed in as little as one year, or as many as six. It may also be earned in conjunction with a masters or doctoral degree. In fact, in many cases, students may count coursework earned toward their graduate degree as part of their Certificate program. For instance, an MSW student may count a practicum with an aging-related organization as their Capstone course for the Certificate in Gerontology.
The Graduate Certificate in Gerontology requires 21 credits of coursework and 150 hours of Field (formerly Experiential) Education.
See our Program Requirements for more information.
While many of our courses are offered on-line, this is not an on-line program. Some courses are only offered in the classroom, and most of the on-line courses require students to take the tests at the ASU West campus.
